The National Zakat Foundation strives to ensure that its policies and procedures are in full accordance with the guidelines of the Qur’an and Sunnah.

The details of calculating, paying and receiving Zakat often differ amongst Islamic scholars. However, within the spectrum of acceptable differences of opinion, the National Zakat Foundation aims to adopt policies that are in the best interests of the poor and needy as well as those that are the most practical to implement in our current Canadian context.

Sheikh Tawfique Chowdhury

Sheikh Tawfique Chowdhury

Sheikh Tawfique Chowdhury is the Founder, Chairman and CEO of Mercy Mission which he established in 2005. Sheikh Tawfique excelled in his Islamic studies both classically from the scholars of Madinah as well as graduating from the college of Shari’ah from the Islamic University of Madinah. He is also an experienced business professional, having been CEO of a multinational IT company and also a practising medical doctor in Australia. He is also a corporate trainer and business coach to many successful people worldwide.

Being a prolific speaker, Dr Tawfique has travelled internationally sharing his knowledge in many countries worldwide. He is well known for specialising in Islamic legal topics, particularly in Islamic finance, personal law and Islamic Medical Ethics and his opinions in these matters are eagerly sought. He is also a well-known media contributor on various TV Channels worldwide.

Sheikh Hacene Chebbani

Sh Hacene Chebbani

Sheikh Hacene Chebbani was born in Algeria and has been living in Canada for the last 13 years. In 1993 he graduated in Sharīʿah (BA) from the Islamic University of Madinah with a grade of excellence. While there he took the opportunity to study ʿAqīdah, Fiqh and Ḥadīth with some of the notable scholars of that blessed city.

In Canada Sheikh Hacene has worked in Islamic schools teaching the Arabic language and Islamic studies and has served as Sharīʿah consultant and headteacher for over 6 years.

Sheikh Hacene is currently an Imam in Calgary where he gives regular classes and counselling, leading the prayers for a diverse community. He is married and has 4 children and enjoys sports and reading in his spare time.

Sheikh Hacene has completed a Master’s in Islamic finance.
